The aims of the project are:

a. Integration of child-care institutions in the countries in the pre-adhering phase and their alignment to Community standards of respecting child's rights;
b. Establishing a common environment for the psychological and social development of institutionalized children in European countries;
c. Vocational training and certification of educators and social workers in this field.

Results :

In order to relieve the aforementioned deficiencies the present project proposes to achieve the following results:

1. Devising curricula and educational modules for educators in placement centers - traditional and ODL courses, finalized with certification at the level of the participating countries.
These courses will include:


- The influence of institutionalization on the development of child's personality (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Cognitive education (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries):  - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Social problem solving (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD

- Child psychology - evolution of ages (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- The need for affection of the institutionalized child (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- The consequences of abuse on the development of child's personality (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Development of self-esteem and trust in his/her own capacities (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries):  - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Formation of independent life habits (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Conflicts and means of overcoming them (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD

The products will be available in the 14th month of the project.

 

2. Devising curricula and educational modules for social workers working with children of school age - traditional and ODL courses, finalized with certification at the level of the participating countries.
These courses will include:


- Legislation on child protection (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Creative communication skills (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Conflict mediation (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Helping children overcome trauma (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- International landmarks and national regulations (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- The role of the family in child's development (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- The link between institution and family- first step towards family reintegration (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- The role of the local authorities in ensuring the well being of institutionalized children (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Continuing training of the social worker (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- The support given by the social worker to the youth leaving the institution at the age of majority (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Social worker provided for the person with special needs (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
- Preventing juvenile delinquency (in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries): - on hard copy, ODL & CD
The product will be available in the 18th month of the project.

3. Initiation courses in computers and the Internet for educators (so that they could supervise and advise children) and for institutionalized children (in order to create the necessary skills to contact other children of different nationalities).
These courses will include:


- Elementary hardware knowledge - in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries: - on hard copy and ODL
- Windows 95/98 and 2000 operating systems - in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries: - on hard copy and ODL
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office 97/2000 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) - in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries: - on hard copy and ODL
- Initiation in browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape) - in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries: - on hard copy and ODL
- Basic knowledge for creating web pages with Front Page programme - in English and then translated into the languages of the participating countries: - on hard copy and ODL
These courses will be available in the 18th month of the project.

4. French and English courses (beginner and intermediate levels) for institutionalized children, grouped by age, in order for them to acquire the necessary knowledge to communicate with other children in the European area - on CDs.
These courses will be available in the 18th month.

5. A database including all childcare institutions, at the level of participating countries meant to provide access to information to all factors involved in resolving the problems of institutionalized children; experience exchanges and turning to good account this experience, as well as the identification of vocational training needs. This result of the project will be written in English, published on the Internet and will be available in the 22 month.

6. Creation of a unique portal for all institutionalized children in Europe, to include educational components (interactive games, encyclopedias, skills tests, multimedia applications) and a chat service - month 27.
